How long is a relationship check-in?
Plan on about an hour. The first check-in runs 60 to 75 minutes. That is not a sign you are doing it wrong. It is the time it takes to learn the rhythm and to say things you have not said in a while.
What takes the time?
The Relationship Check-In Method™ moves through five phases: Gratitude, Re-friending, Connection, Future-Gazing and Conflict Resolution. You also begin by reading the Check-In Commitments aloud. Each part needs room, and rushing the last phase, conflict resolution, is what usually turns a check-in into an argument.
How do you protect the hour?
- Put it on both calendars. A check-in that is “sometime this week” usually does not happen.
- Choose a calm time. Not when either of you is hungry, rushed or tense.
- Phones away. Screen-free is part of the point.
- Have your questions ready. Use our 25 check-in questions or the printable template.
What if an hour feels like too much?
That is a common first reaction. Remember that you are replacing the unplanned, heated version of this conversation with a calm one. If you truly cannot find an hour this week, do not shrink the check-in to five rushed minutes. Spend a short time on Gratitude and pick a time for the rest.
Does it get faster?
Often, yes. Once you know the format, there is less warm-up. The Relationship Check-In Deck™ and Happy Partners AI both guide you through the same phases, so you are never wondering what comes next.
