Why do check-ins help?
If talking about the relationship feels like walking into a room with no lights on, a check-in turns the lights on. You know when it happens, how long it takes (about an hour) and what comes next. Nobody is ambushed, and nobody has to improvise.
What do you actually do?
- Pick a time together. Put it on the calendar.
- Phones away.
- Read the Check-In Commitments aloud. They set the ground rules for respect.
- Go through five phases in order: Gratitude, Re-friending, Connection, Future-Gazing, Conflict Resolution. See the full Method.
- Take turns. When it is your partner's turn, your job is to listen, not to fix.
How do you start the conversation?
Try something short and low-pressure:
“Can we set aside an hour this week to check in on us? It starts with what we appreciate about each other. No big talk about what is wrong.”
What if you do not know what to say?
Use a script. These openers work in almost any check-in:
- “One thing I appreciated about you this week was…”
- “I felt closest to you when…”
- “Something I have been wanting to say is…”
- “What I needed in that moment was…”

What if you would rather start on your own?
That is fine. Happy Partners AI has a Solo Exploration mode for working through your thoughts and rehearsing a conversation before you have it. It is free to start (20 free sessions, no credit card).
